NEW SPECIALIST FOREST PRODUCTS TERM AT ASSOCIATED BRITISH PORTS’ PORT OF IMMINGHAM
Associated British Ports (ABP) is to invest £1 million in the development of a new specialist forest products terminal at its Port of Immingham.

The 9,000 sq m terminal will be located within a short distance of Immingham’s eastern quays, and will provide specialist storage facilities for high-value pulp and paper traffics. One of the first customers to use the new facility – under a term contract - will be the US company, Bowater Incorporated, a major producer of pulp and paper, which has redirected this part of its business to Immingham from a port located in the south of England. ABP will service Bowater’s pulp customers in the north of England, including Kimberly-Clark, whose nappy-production plant is located only 14 miles from Immingham at Barton-upon-Humber.

John Fitzgerald, Deputy Port Manager, ABP Grimsby & Immingham, said:

“Our proximity to Bowater’s customers was an important factor in the company’s decision to move its operations to the Port of Immingham. The Immingham location reduces lorry miles, and enables Bowater to provide their customers with a more responsive service.”

Paul Rea, Manager, Logistics & Customer Service, Bowater Pulp division, said:

"Immingham's strategic location, combined with the development of specialist facilities for our sensitive cargo and a new inventory-control system, linking us directly to the terminal, encouraged us to support ABP's venture. We look forward to developing our business through the new terminal."

The facility will become operational in March 2003.

Immingham is already the UK port of entry for several major Scandinavian paper producers, including Stora Enso, Hunsfoss, Munkedal, Peterson Linerboard and Trebuk. With its sister-port Grimsby, the Humber port complex is the UK’s number-one port in tonnage terms.
