One of only a few harbours in the UK capable of handling capesize vessels of up to 170,000 dwt, and located within easy reach of the open sea, Port Talbot has direct mainline rail access and lies adjacent to the M4. It comprises the Tidal Harbour, which handles cape-size bulk vessels, and Port Talbot Docks, which accommodate smaller heavy-lift and general-cargo vessels.

Cargoes of coal, iron ore, sand, cement, steel and processed and granulated slag are handled at Port Talbot, which also has the capacity to handle large volumes of renewable energy-related cargoes, such as wood chip and biomass. The port’s recent accreditation to ISO 9001:2000 is testament to its first-class, quality-management practices in the handling of bulk cargoes.
