ContainersHull’s container traffic is primarily handled at Queen Elizabeth Dock by Hull Container Terminal, which handles around 260,000 TEU’s per year for operators such as Samskip, EuroAfrica Shipping Lines and Finnlines. The terminal provides 300 m of quay – enabling three vessels to be berthed simultaneously – and over 7.5 ha of storage for all types of container, including refrigerated units and hazardous goods. In addition, groupage facilities are available, and full and less-than-full container loads are catered for. Containers are also handled in Alexandra Dock by Rix Shipping Co Ltd.

Dry BulksAggregates, agribulks, cement, chemicals, coal, cocoa and grain are all handled at the Port of Hull. Benefiting from substantial recent investment, both by ABP and its customers, these dry-bulk trades are supported by a broad range of modern dry bulk-handling facilities. Hull offers: · Aggregates: Sand and gravel cargoes are handled by Humber Sand and Gravel Limited at their Alexandra Dock-based terminal. This material is dredged in the North Sea using specialist vessels to supply the local construction industry. Aggregates and other dry bulk traffic are also handled by Harding Cargo Handling Ltd at their Albert Dock facility. · Agribulks: Specialist handling and storage is offered by New Holland Bulk Services (Hull) Limited, with 40,000 tonnes of covered storage capacity available and a direct conveyor link from the discharging berth. A 28-tonne floating crane is also available and a floating weigh tower can be deployed within King George, Queen Elizabeth and Alexandra Docks. · Cement: Titan Cement UK Ltd operates a dedicated terminal with a storage capacity of 20,000 tonnes, handling imports of quality-assured cement from Greece. · Chemicals: The Euro-terminal in Alexandra Dock is operated by Harding Cargo Handling Ltd. A number of dry bulk cargoes are handled at the terminal including grains and animal feeds but cargoes include imports of bulk soda ash which is used in the manufacture of glass. · Coal and coal products: Kingston Terminal, Queen Elizabeth Dock, is operated by Hull Bulk Handling Limited and specialises in coal and petroleum coke handling, with other products accommodated on demand. Quayside discharge is linked to 0.4 ha of open storage by covered conveyor or can be direct to motor through-hoppers. · Cocoa: Both bagged and bulk cocoa is handled in Hull, with dedicated storage facilities serving major producers such as Nestle and Cadbury. · Grain: A specialist silo facility for grain exports in King George Dock is operated by Frontier Agriculture Limited. With a maximum capacity of 60,000 tonnes, it mainly handles worldwide exports of wheat and barley. Grain is also handled at the Euro-terminal in Alexandra Dock and by Harding Cargo Handling Limited in Albert Dock. Paper and Forest ProductsHull, the UK’s largest softwood timber-handling port, greatly increased its capacity for handling forest products with the opening of the Finland Terminal in 2000. Hull is on the main softwood timber trade routes from Northern Europe, the Baltic states and Scandinavia. The Finland Terminal, with more than 70,000 sq m of covered storage, is a hub for Finnish paper producers. The port handles over 1.5 million cu m of timber each year, and offers regular liner services carrying timber. Considerable areas of covered and open storage, plus value-added services, such as timber-treatment and sawmills, are also available on the port estate. Timber traffic is also handled at the specialist terminals operated by Ahlmark Shipping UK Ltd, Global Shipping Services Ltd, Finnforest UK Ltd, SCA Timber, TTS Shipping Ltd, Rix Shipping Co Ltd, Harding Cargo Handling Ltd, North Sea Lumber (Sales) Ltd and Leafe & Hawkes Ltd. · Finland Terminal offers over 70,000 sq m of covered accommodation for the storage of paper, pulp and panel products from Finland and is the northern UK hub for the Finnish forest products industry. The principal user of the terminal is a consortium of Finnish paper producers, with three times a week ro-ro sailings operated by Finnlines from Helsinki, Hamina and Rauma, along with additional sailings from Pietarsaari and Puhos using conventional vessels · Regular conventional cargo liner services are operated by Ahlmark Lines, SCA, Baltic England Line, Rix Baltic Line and TTS Shipping Fresh Produce & PerishablesHull’s contribution to the UK fishing and fish-processing industries was enhanced by the recent development of the Fishgate fish-auction market which is based at Albert & William Wright Docks; it is a high-tech fish-handling facility providing real-time linkage to other European fish markets. Hull Cold Store, a 24,000 cu m high-specification cold-storage facility operated by ABP in King George Dock, is equipped with a 9,000 pallet capacity and has 7 blast-freezing for freezing products down to –18°C. The cold store also has EFSIS cold store quality accreditation and USDA approval. Andrew Johnston Knudtzon Ltd offers 56,000 cu m of cold storage in Hull with a quayside facility capable of handling over 1,000 pallets per day. The benefits that Hull offers the fresh produce trade include: · a land and sale point for both wet fish from local trawlers and produce brought overland from all over the British Isles General CargoWith a wide selection of trading routes and versatile cargo-handling facilities, Hull has a reputation for being one of the East Coast’s principal ports for general cargo. Regular liner services operate between Hull and the South Pacific, carrying a range of commodities including forest products, steel, project cargoes and liquid bulks. Storage facilities for general cargo incorporate over 40 transit sheds covering 230,000 sq m and 65 ha of open storage, with groupage services and cargo consolidation available. Regular liner services call at the Port of Hull, such as Bank Line operating its conventional vessels carrying general cargo and liquid bulks between Hull and the South Pacific. Other deep-sea liner services call on an inducement basis Liquid BulksThe BP chemical plant at Saltend is Hull’s largest liquid-bulk complex and is one of the world’s largest producers of acetic acid. The plant contains a gas-fired power station and includes new production lines for vinyl acetate and ethyl acetate. Liquid-bulk handling at Hull now plays an increasingly important role at the port, which has seen a significant rise in imports of edible oils over recent years. AarhusKarlshamn, based in King George Dock, imports edible oils for its refinery which produces, among other products, cooking oils, specialist oils and ice-cream fats. Other major liquid-bulks customers include Tate & Lyle Ltd, which operates from two sites at King George Dock, and offers common-user tank storage for petroleum products and chemicals. International Bulk Liquids Ltd operates a storage facility on Alexandra Dock and Tate & Lyle Ltd and Westway Terminals operate tank farms on King George Dock for the storage of imported molasses for the animal-feed industry. · the BP chemical plant at Saltend is Hull's largest liquid bulks complex and is the largest producer of acetic acid in Europe. New ethyl acetate and vinyl acetate production lines have recently been installed at the complex. Passengers & CruisesHull provides the only passenger service from the Humber Estuary. Each year, nearly one million passengers pass through the port on P&O Ferries’ daily sailings to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge. Hull is also an increasingly popular port of call for cruise vessels, with good access to the nearby tourist areas of Yorkshire. Hull offers: · the only passenger service from the Humber estuary Ro-RoRo-ro traffic accounts for the largest proportion of the port’s annual throughput and facilities have been greatly expanded in recent years. There are 11 ro-ro berths in the enclosed docks and one on the riverside. The Rotterdam Terminal accommodates Pride of Hull and Pride of Rotterdam – the super-cruise-ferries operated by P&O Ferries on the Hull-Rotterdam crossing. Hull offers: · 11 ro-ro berths within the enclosed dock system - one at Alexandra Dock and 10 at King George & Queen Elizabeth Docks - and one outside berth on the riverfront. Steel & Other MetalsHull’s all-weather Steel Terminal, the UK’s first fully-enclosed steel-handling facility provides all-weather working. The ISO 9001:2000-accredited terminal provides a ‘one-stop-shop’ for ship’s agency, cargo-handling, storage and distribution and offers 10,000 sq m of covered and a further area of open storage for non-weather-sensitive steel products. Hull also handles steel and metal cargoes at a number of other terminals operated by Ahlmark Shipping UK Ltd and NW Trading Ltd in King George Dock, Rix Shipping Co Ltd in Alexandra Dock and Harding Cargo Handling Ltd in Albert & William Wright Docks. Hull’s all-weather Steel Terminal offers: · accommodation for ships of up to 13.5 m air draught.
